About Dr. Melissa Wilke
Dr. Melissa Wilke attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada where she earned her Bachelor in Arts, Psychology. After attaining this degree, she wanted to continue her study in health care and considered medical school. But in investigating Chiropractic she found that the integrated approach to medicine made more sense. Her schooling proved as rigorous as medical school and the practice has evolved to incorporate key treatment strategies such as acupuncture, ultrasound, blood analysis, biomechanics and massage.
This manner of health care allows Dr. Wilke and her patients to achieve healthy results without use of prescription drugs with negative side effects or surgery that can create as many problems as it solves.
Chiropractic is a natural, pain free alternative that brings about positive changes in peoples’ lives and Dr. Wilke highly values her patient relationships and the ability to positively impact their lives.
The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease. Thomas Edison
Dr. Melissa Wilke helps you identify the source of specific problems in your body to help you achieve proper alignment and eliminate pain due to compensatory muscle spasm, contraction or bone impact. Our objective is always to help you reduce or remove pain and generate a positive, healthful response in your overall body structure. The simple correction of chronic muscle and/or postural imbalances has been shown to improve daily function in work, family and exercise goals. Chiropractic is a clear path to a healthier life.
Benefits of Chiropractic
People who choose chiropractic care, are often seeking a natural healing method for common and uncommon sources of pain due to problems with muscular, skeletal and body function. These include repair of injuries or reduced function from sciatica, neck pain, whiplash or tension headaches, just to name a few. While many patients visit a chiropractor initially to relieve pain and restore function, many people choose consistent chiropractic treatment for its pursuant health benefits. Our patients respond with improved body functioning, including improved digestive health and nerve function. Benefits such as these also lead to better emotional health. Removing chronic pain and restoring range of motion simply makes life easier. Chiropractic care also leads to better body awareness, health consciousness and restoration of physical and emotional capabilities. These often include functions once lost to injury, overuse or age.
A Healing Approach
Dr. Melissa Wilke interviews every patient to learn their priorities and perspectives on health. She seeks to learn about your nutrition, sleep, environment, work and daily life habits to determine possible problems with diet or other contributing factors. With this information she can help you identify issues that might be contributing to back or neck pain, headaches or low energy levels. There are so many factors in life that can contribute to disease or pain that it is important to consider the whole person rather than treating just the parts that hurt or don’t work right. All this is accomplished in a caring, confidential and compassionate manner that leads to a healing approach. Time-honored methods such as consultation, case history, physical examination, blood testing, laboratory analysis, x-ray evaluation and careful chiropractic structural examination are some of the ways Dr. Wilke assesses the needs of her patients.
Partners in Health Care
Dr. Melissa Wilke works in tandem with other health care professionals including your family physician and specialists from other branches of the medical profession. If your condition re-quires attention in these areas, Dr. Wilke provides the appropriate referral to her network of partners in health care or your provider.
No Drugs. No Surgery.
One of the appealing aspects of chiropractic is that it presents a health alternative to the somewhat “automatic” prescription of drugs to treat pain, or surgery to repair the body. In-stead chiropractors approach the body with tools that correct vertebral misalignments (sublux-ations) of the spine and joints. Manual adjustments may be used, as well as electrical muscular stimulation methods commonly used in physical therapy. Ultrasound and massage are also useful in reducing swelling and increasing function of damaged muscles or connective tissue. Mechanical traction and decompression therapy are essential in helping with muscle spasm and nerve compression as are active and passive stretching. Dr. Wilke will guide you through beneficial exercises and rehab techniques to ensure you gain the most ground towards recovery. Just know that chiropractic is a natural healing method. It stimulates the body’s communication systems to engage cellular repair systems ranging from white blood cells to warming and cooling of the joints and muscles that occurs naturally during the body’s healing cycles. You can appreciate that this approach delivers a beneficial effect to the cells, organs and systems of the body. Like yoga and other traditional healing arts, chiropractic calls up the body’s natural defenses against disease and damage to bring better health about through stimulation and manipulation.
Pain in the human body can result from sudden impacts or accidents, but it can also be produced from chronic overuse as well as imbalances in muscle strength, including poor sitting or standing postures. Chiropractic manipulation (adjustments) addresses these issues following an overall assessment of the source and nature of your problems. We then apply the appropriate treatments for your body, paying specific attention to your muscular, nervous and joint systems to ensure you are on the path towards optimal function in your everyday and active life. “Adjustments” are exactly what they sound like. These are manipulations of the body, specifically the spine and joints, to help your body achieve improved range of motion, joint function and muscular balance. One of the wonderful byproducts of this restoration process is that it encourages the body to engage its natural healing power. This includes incredibly sensitive mechanoreceptors (joint position sensors) that your body uses to monitor its own health and function. Many of our patients sense this restoration immediately after treatment, while others need more time depending on the severity of joint or spinal misalignment. Not everything can be fixed overnight through manipulation. Because our bodies take time to become misaligned, it can also take time to restore proper function. Understand that we always collaborate with our patients to determine proper timing and pace of treatment. Most of all, our adjustments are a safe, gentle and effective treatment for most neck, back and hip and any other joint issues. We also help people regain health function of the joints (elbow, wrist, knee and ankle…). Many athletes depend on us for regular maintenance while training. But in truth, all of us are “life athletes” in that we require healthy movement to manage our daily functions in work, family and recreation. Dr. Melissa Wilke is a highly trained, board certified chiropractic physician capable in a wide range of techniques for accomplishing adjustments with her patients. Every patient receives individualized, compassionate treatment to focus on the needs, wants and tolerances of every individual she sees.
As a 5000 year old system of natural healing developed by the Chinese, acupuncture is increasingly recognized as a beneficial method for stimulating blood flow and body response for people experiencing pain and other interruptions of the body’s healthy function. Acupuncture is known to restore energy and blood flow to the organs of the body, including glands and tissues the body uses to combat disease and maintain energy levels in day to day life. The approach is based on the Chinese definition of health in which all parts of the body are functioning together. The Chinese describe this rhythm and flow as the chi, an energy or life force that maintains organ function while preventing disease, pain and emotional suffering. If you view your body in context of natural energy flow, it makes sense there are channels with-in the body, often just below the skin surface that regulate the flow and distribution of healthy nutrients, blood and “energy.” Acupuncture complements chiropractic manipulation and provides benefits to the human body all on its own. Dr. Melissa Wilke uses acupuncture in consultation with her patients experiencing health challenges across a wide spectrum. These include psychosomatic disturbances, environmental challenges to the body, malnutrition, injury, emotional and mental states, infertility, female regulation, anxiety, sleep issues and many others.
The listed ailments treated with acupuncture run into the hundreds. These include neuralgias, headaches, tics, spasms, muscular issues, shoulder and arm ailments, tennis elbow, osteoarthritis, ulcers, stomach problems, diarrhea, asthma, bronchitis, shortness of breath, coughs, blood pressure, hemorrhoids, lumbago, bladder, bed wetting, female functions, impotence, hay fever, allergies, loss of senses including smell, skin conditions, nervous and psychiatric disorders, which often arise or interact through physical disorders. While this list seems exhaustive, acupuncture has a long history and a proven capacity to deliver relief from these disorders. As a healing art it also addresses the body as a whole or a system, not a separate coagulation of parts. These include digestive, respiratory, excretory, reproductive, hormonal, musculoskeletal and brain function. Perhaps 20% of patients do not feel the benefits of acupuncture or are uncomfortable with the approach. Some conditions cannot be treated if they are chronic, age-related or the result of irreversible tissue damage. Yet most patients discover enhanced function through acupuncture.
Many imbalances in the body begin at ground level, where the stability and structure of the foot is critical to overall body function and physical health.
To many people it sounds unlikely that foot alignment is so important. But imbalances in the foot can lead to chronic, debilitating knee and hip pain. It can cause lower back stress and even spinal or shoulder dysfunction.
How do foot mechanics affect my body?
Your foot depends on an incredibly complex structure of bones, connective tissue (fascia) and muscles to make it work. If there is a structural deficiency in your foot, such as a bone that is too short or a weakness in muscles or fascia, your foot can lean to one side or the other.
Leaning inward is called pronation. That pulls the knee out of alignment which can lead to chondromalacia, or a wearing down of the cartilage under the knee. This painful condition if left untreated can result in bone-on-bone contact and lead to arthritis of the knee.
Foot imbalances can also cause compensatory structural misalignment. That is, when your feet throw off the alignment of your legs, the angle of your legs inserting into your pelvic area can get thrown off. This can lead to lower back pain, sciatica and other painful responses.
If you’ve experienced foot, knee or lower back pain, it is worth being assessed to see if these problems start down at the ground level. Orthotics, or inserts in your shoes designed to balance your foot’s position in your shoes, can often result in much better function of your knees, legs and hips.
This is true for everyone, but especially for people who train for sports like running and cycling. Foot imbalances are the cause of many chronic injuries. Treatment of foot mechanics in combi-nation with chiropractic treatment can often get your back and body on the road to a healthier lifestyle and training program.

We’re accustomed to thinking about ultrasound as the method by which we view babies in the mother’s womb. That is best known as diagnostic ultrasound.
However ultrasound has many healing properties as well. It is used to treat conditions such as these:
- Tendon and ligament injuries
- Muscle and soft tissue injuries
- Scar tissue
- Arthritis and bursitis
It works like this: ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves emitted from a therapy machine that controls the level and focus of these waves. It works extremely well as a non-invasive treatment for damaged soft tissue by stimulating blood flow and natural healing functions.
A warmed gel is applied directly to the surface of the skin. Then the ultrasound wand is rotated against the skin in circular fashion, distributing the sound waves throughout the tissue. The gel helps amplify the process and actually magnetizes the sound waves from the device. You’ll of-ten see ultrasound used in physical therapy clinics in helping patients recover from surgery. The sound vibrations are extremely fast, as much as one million times per second. Thus they reverberate through the tissue with a beneficially penetrating yet subtle force. This generates a low heat response and the body swings into action with its natural healing mechanisms. Swelling and pain are addressed through blood flow and blood cells moving through the afflicted area, flushing out damaged cells and replacing them with new ones.
This breaks down scar tissue as well, which can cause adhesions that limit function. Ultrasound in combination with chiropractic manipulation and massage effectively form a physical therapy strategy that works to loosen and repair damage, tightness and limited range of motion in the body.
Some age-old techniques have not changed in philosophy, but have advanced in methodology. Moist heat is one of those methods. Moist heat penetrates deep into the muscles, often reducing muscle tension while producing relaxation and reduction of pain. Typically it is never used in the first 48 hours after an injury since the body’s natural reaction is to produce heat and swelling in the injured area.
Soft Tissue Manipulation
The widespread use of soft tissue therapy such as massage, trigger-point therapy and myofascial stripping are evidence that the greater medical community recognizes the benefits of manipulating soft tissue for health benefits. These methods help increase flexibility, increase range of motion and promote healing. In combination with chiropractic treatment and support mechanisms such as ultrasound or acupuncture, these methods can greatly enhance health or return to health.
IFC provides symptomatic relief from pain. It is a safe alternative to drug therapies and when used in combination with heat proves extremely effective for pain relief and lessening of muscle spasm. IFC delivers very specific muscle stimulation using an externally applied, carefully regulated electrical current device to draw healing blood and generate beneficial muscle contraction in areas of your body that have been injured, experience spasms, pulls or tears and require relaxation in order to benefit from other forms of treatment including manipulation or massage. Physiotherapy is the combination of these methods together to promote healing.
Pressure from bulging or herniated discs can cause nerve compressions in the back and neck and radiate pain or numbness down the arms and legs. The appropriate treatment is to relieve that pressure and alleviate pain. We offer a gentle, non-invasive treatment to deliver relief from debilitating pain.
Spinal decompression therapy is designed to unload the spinal disc. Any back pain or neck pain caused in whole or in part by a damaged disc may be helped by spinal decompression therapy. These conditions include herniated, protruding or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica or radiculopathy (pinched nerves).
The vacuum effect accomplishes two things. From a mechanical standpoint, disc material that has protruded or herniated outside the normal confines of the disc can be pulled back within the disc by the vacuum created within the disc. Also, the vacuum within the disc stimulates in growth of blood supply, secondarily stimulating a healing response. This results in pain reduction and proper healing at the injured site.
This technique is used as an alternative to the usual manipulations performed with the hands. The device is computerized and is extremely beneficial for patients who prefer not to be manually adjusted or suffer from severe osteoporosis or any other condition which precludes them from being manually adjusted. The Activator method accomplishes the same things are manual adjusting does, in a gentler manner. Be sure to let Dr. Wilke know if you fall into these categories or prefer to use this technique.
Dr. Wilke understands that her patients’ bodies will not remain in great condition if the appropriate exercises/stretches and strengthening is not performed. As such Dr. Wilke recommends specific exercises and stretches that can be performed in the office and at home in order to prolong the positive effects they gain during treatment.
Flexion Distraction is a form of spinal manipulation that is extremely effective in relieving low back pain and/or leg pain. Flexion Distraction decompresses the disc through the use of stretching or traction and is performed on a specialized table. In the process it helps restore normal physiological ranges of motion to the affected spine and muscles. This technique is gentle and uses no force to achieve the manipulation.

Thank You MelissaWhen I started Chiropractic care 2 months ago, I had a lot of low back and neck tension. I would need to crack my back and neck up to 5 times a day in order to alleviate the tension. But now, I don’t feel as tense and I feel a real improvement in my neck and back, which I feel can only improve more with time.Lisa A.

Dr. Wilke has increased my hip and muscle flexibility. As a long time athlete who lifts, runs, rides, swims and does yoga, I recognize the importance of spinal health and joint function. Dr. Melissa works with me on hip and muscle flexibility. We also plan strategies to manage soreness and recovery from workouts. Family Flooring America.I went to Dr. Wilke initially to deal with pain in my lower back and my neck. I have had surgery to fuse two discs in my neck, and I broke a vertebrae in my lower back that healed crooked when I was a child. Using a variety of techniques Dr. Wilke has greatly reduced the frequency of my pain bouts with my lower back, and has managed to help my neck become far more mobile with fewer episodes of pain and stiffness. As I do some heavier lifting with work, and I drive a lot of miles for my job, these are recurring problems for me. Dr. Wilke has been wonderful helping me keep these problems under control, which allows me to continue working and driving.Karol Petit
Dr. Melissa is great.I've been to another chiropractor in the past and he would rush me in and out and I would feel more like a number. With Dr. M I feel more like a patient and friend than a number. She takes the time needed to diagnose what is going on each time, rather than treat me for the same thing each time. Symptoms change and she treats according to those changes. I would highly recommend using Dr. M.A.N.
